A Solver model is the set of target cell, all adjustable cells, and any constraints for the current problem that you want Solver to solve. Instead of entering a model s target cell, adjustable cells, and constraints every time you open the Solver Parameters dialog box, you can save time by loading an existing model and then running Solver. You can also save your own models that you can load into Solver later.

Figure 16-15. A concurrency error in action Timestamps are special fields that the database uses to keep track of the state of a record. Whenever any change is made to a record, the database engine updates the timestamp field, giving it a new, automatically generated value. The purpose of a timestamp field is to make strict concurrency checking easier. When you attempt to perform an update to a table that includes a timestamp field, you use a Where clause that matches the appropriate unique ID value (like ProductID) and the timestamp field: UpdateCommand="UPDATE Products SET ProductName=@ProductName, UnitPrice=@UnitPrice, UnitsInStock=@UnitsInStock, UnitsOnOrder=@UnitsOnOrder, ReorderLevel=@ReorderLevel, Discontinued=@Discontinued WHERE ProductID=@ProductID AND RowTimestamp=@RowTimestamp" The database engine uses the ProductID to look up the matching record. Then, it attempts to match the timestamp in order to update the record. If the timestamp matches, you know the record hasn t been changed. The actual value of the timestamp isn t important, because that s controlled by the database. You just need to know whether it s changed. Creating a timestamp is easy. In SQL Server, you create a timestamp field using the timestamp data type. In other database products, timestamps are sometimes called row versions.

Line 2 performs the test. Using the Auth->user() function and passing the value role, you re telling Auth to look for a field named role and see whether it contains admin. If the user is not given the admin role in the users table, then he will not be authorized to view anything other than the Index and View actions. This same check can be accomplished in the model rather than the controller. Rather than set Auth->authorize to controller, set it to model instead. Then run the isAuthorized() function in the model rather than the controller. The function will need to include the $user, $controller, and $action parameters to work in the model (see Listing 11-9).

This chapter presented a thorough overview of data binding in ASP.NET. First, you learned an interesting way to create dynamic text with simple data binding. Although this is a reasonable approach to get information into your page, it doesn t surpass what you can already do with pure code. You also learned how ASP.NET builds on this infrastructure with much more useful features, including repeated-value binding for quick-and-easy data display in a list control, and data source controls, which let you create code-free bound pages. Using the techniques in this chapter, you can create a wide range of data-bound pages. However, if you want to create a page that incorporates record editing, sorting, and other more advanced tricks, the data binding features you ve learned about so far are just the first step. You ll also need to turn to specialized controls, such as the DetailsView and the GridView, which build upon these data binding features. You ll learn how to master these controls in the next chapter. In 23 you ll learn how to extend your data binding skills to work with data access components.
